Chapter 7

Asher

The rest of Asher’s day at college passed without much drama. His classes were mostly introductory, and his peers were friendly if a little distracted by their new environment. Asher himself was distracted too, but it didn’t have anything to do with college. No, he was thinking about Blaine.

The heated kiss they’d shared in his office was still lingering in his memory. His body could still feel the press of Blaine’s hands, touching his skin and tugging on his hair. He spent the majority of his lecture on the history of western architecture thinking about how warm and soft Blaine’s lips were against his own.

This professor is going to be bad for my education.

Once his classes were done, Asher wanted to go and find Blaine again to finish what they started, but he couldn’t. He’d booked an induction at a local gym and headed straight there. It felt good to take care of one more task on his list after moving to a new town and the workout he indulged in afterward left him feeling lighter and refreshed.

As he walked home, Asher took in the beauty of the world around him. Since Blaine had come into his life, everything seemed much brighter, more vivid. Asher found himself living in the moment much more than ever before. He passed the dog park and watched a young rottweiler chasing a ball across the grass. Fall was underway; orange and brown leaves danced in the air around him, and Asher couldn’t stop smiling.

It was as if his world had been black and white his entire life up until he met Blaine, and now he was experiencing color for the first time.

Is this what it is like to be in love? he pondered with wonder sparkling in his eyes.

Asher couldn’t wait any longer. He retrieved his phone from his pocket and dialed Blaine’s number. The anticipation was making his stomach flip as he waited for the other man to pick up, so he stopped and leaned against a nearby tree. The cool autumn breeze was soothing on his face and helped him to calm down.

“Asher . . .” a breathless voice answered.

“Blaine,” Asher greeted, smiling with joy. “It’s so good to hear your voice. How are you doing?”

There was a brief pause. “I’m fine.”

Those two short, sharp words were enough to wipe the grin from Asher’s face. Something was definitely wrong, and he had no idea what it was.

“Are you sure? You don’t sound fine,” he pried, reaching up to play with his lip ring as he grew more and more uncomfortable.

“Yeah, I’m fine,” Blaine insisted. “But I think it would be best if you deleted this number.”

Time stood still. The world that had seemed so beautiful only moments ago was now crashing down around him. The birds chirping in the trees nearby were silenced, and his vision grew blurry. What is going on? I don’t understand . . .

“Why?” he asked, barely able to voice that singular word through the emotions stuck in his throat.
